You can see ’em working! (Two Five Zero 011)

There’s many characters in Oz besides those familiar from the movie — we read all the books to our twins. There’s Bungle the transparent cat — Her few visible parts: emerald eyes, ruby heart, and pink brains. She often proudly declares of her brains, “you can see ’em working.”

Our Better Future will be designed and constructed in plain view. The book and everything else will never stop being works in progress and you’ll be able to “see ’em working.” The following passages are from Chapter 4: The Broad Outline.

Methodology — I want many people to adopt these projects and make them their own. I’m not interested in ownership. The primary advantage of believing I won’t live all that much longer — and that there are thousands of person-hours of work to be done — is that I can embrace the fact that if my plans are to come to any fruition at all then many, many others will do some of the work.

(Interestingly, that paragraph was written a month before the blood work that would lead to my cancer diagnosis, so was either a premonition or just about my lung disease mortality.)

All further construction will be done in plain sight. I wrote and directed a play in college in which everything that happened backstage was visible to the audience — maybe, after all this time, I’m finding out what I was talking about. There’s freedom in this approach, and a kind of vertiginous joy. I’m looking forward to it.
